Chapter Fourteen
Carrie awoke the next morning just before dawn and smiled to herself. Holly lay next to her with one arm possessively wrapped around her waist. She lightly ran her fingers back and forth up Hollyâs forearm, loving the feel of the soft, warm skin.
Fear settled over her when she realised Holly was way past drunk last night and this morning; she would probably run after she woke up. Carrie stopped her ministrations. She didnât want to wake her and end this moment.
But it was too late. Hollyâs arm tightened, and her hand ran up Carrieâs abdomen. It stopped briefly on her breast and finished up on her shoulder. She snuggled closer.
âMorning. Mmm, you smell good,â Holly cooed. Carrie stiffened, distracted by the feel of Hollyâs hand close to her breasts. âYou are awake, arenât you?â
Carrie cleared her throat. âYes.â
âI could get used to waking up like this, next to you.â
Carrie didnât know what to say. Was Holly still drunk? Was she really awake? She shifted onto her other side and faced her. Hollyâs green eyes stared back at her as she gave Carrie a lazy smile.
âYouâre not going to leave?â
Holly shook her head. âWhy would I leave?â
âItâs what you do,â Carrie accused. âYou know? I comfort you, then you tell me to leave you alone.â She closed her eyes, not wanting to see Hollyâs face when she spoke her next sentence. âYou were pretty drunk last night. I wasnât sure if you knew what you were doing.â
Holly cupped her cheek. âIâm stone-cold sober now,â she said just before she lowered her head and captured Carrieâs lips.
She was lost for a moment. Hollyâs kiss shocked her, and boy, did it feel good. Hollyâs lips were gentle as they brushed against hers. Carrie heard a moan but was unsure from which of them it came.
Holly pulled back, a huge smile plastered on her face and chuckled at Carrie. âYou better close your mouth, or Iâll be forced to kiss you again,â she teased.
Carrie slowly opened her eyes, still in disbelief. âI donât understand. Why did you do that?â
âBecause I wanted to.â The look Holly gave her melted her insides. She was sure Holly could see the confusion on her face as she let out a sigh and shook her head slightly. Holly settled her head back on the pillow and Carrie went with her, resting in her arms.
âIâve been a bit of a bitch, I know,â Holly said. âBut I want to change that.â She made lazy circles on Carrieâs back with her fingertips, and Carrieâs skin tingled in their wake. âIâm crazy about you, Carrie. I have been since I saw you at the conference last year. But when I took Delaneyâs campaignââ
âAbout that, I donât blame you anymore.â
Holly smiled. âThatâs nice, but I could have refused to do it and I didnât.â
âYeah, I know, it was your job,â she said sardonically.
Holly closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Her heartbeat thundered in her chest where Carrieâs head lay over her breast.
